"Competence can be a curse." So begins Min Jin Lee's epic novel about class, society, and identity. Casey Han's four years at Princeton have given her many things: "a refined diction, an enviable golf handicap, a popular white boyfriend, an agnostic's closeted passion for reading the Bible, and a magna cum laude degree in economics. But no job and a number of bad habits."
Casey's parents, who live in Queens, are Korean immigrants working in a dry cleaner, desperately trying to hold onto their culture and identity. Their daughter, on the other hand, has entered into the upper echelon of rarified American society via scholarships. But after graduatio! n, Casey's trust-fund friends see only opportunity and choices while Casey sees the reality of having expensive habits without the means to sustain them. As Casey navigates Manhattan, we see her life and the lives of those around her: her sheltered mother, scarred father, her friend Ella who's always been the good Korean girl, Ella's ambitious Korean husband and his Caucasian mistress, Casey's white fiancé, and then her Korean boyfriend, all culminating in a portrait of New York City and its world of haves and have-nots.
FREE FOOD FOR MILLIONAIRES offers up a fresh exploration of the complex layers we inhabit both in society and within ourselves. Inspired by 19th century novels such as Vanity Fair and Middlemarch, Min Jin Lee examines maintaining identity within changing communities. This is a remarkably assured debut from a writer to watch.Free Food for Millionaires, the debut novel from Min Jin Lee, takes on daunting themes of love, money, rac! e, and belief systems in this mostly satisfying tale. Casey H! an is a Princeton grad, class of '93, and it is her conflicts, relationships, and temperament that inform the novel. She is the child of immigrant Korean parents who work in the same laundry in Queens where they have always worked and are trying hard to hang on to their culture. Casey has catapulted out of that life on scholarships but now that college is over, she hasn't the same opportunities as her white friends, even though she has acquired all of their expensive habits.

The concept of free food for millionaires is the perfect irony that describes much of what Casey faces. Walter, one of her bosses, says, when a huge buffet lunch is delivered to the floor: "It's free food for millionaires... In the International Equities Department--that is, Asia, Europe, and Japan Sales--the group you're interviewing for--whichever desk that sells a deal buys lunch for everyone in the department."

Casey is ambivalent about everything--her love life, work, friendships, her family! , dating a Korean man--but she seems to believe that money would sort everything out and smooth any rough spots. She works part-time for a fashion maven who would like to "adopt" her by paying for business school, but Casey can't quite accept all that she offers. She pulls back from help, digs herself deeper in debt, works like a slave during an internship and then, when she is offered the job, finally begins to realize what she might really want--and it isn't only money.

There are several loose ends left dangling, some bad behavior toward others on Casey's part and an unlikely and too coincidental passing acquaintance with an old bookseller whose wife was crazy about hats, as is Casey. When he dies, he leaves all her hats to Casey--which just might just be the start of something. The author runs out of steam after 512 pages and ends the book without really finishing it, but it is a thoughtful treatment of many of the questions Lee raises, and an emninently worthw! hile debut. --Valerie RyanStudio: Virgil Films And Ente! rtai Re lease Date: 02/23/2010 Run time: 122 minutes

In A Troubled Peace, Professor Chae-Jin Lee reviews the vicissitudes of U.S. policy toward South and North Korea since 1948 when rival regimes were installed on the Korean peninsula. He explains the continuously changing nature of U.S.-Korea relations by discussing the goals the United States has sought for Korea, the ways in which these goals have been articulated, and the methods used to implement them.

Using a careful analysis of declassified diplomatic documents, primary materials in English, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese, and extensive interviews with American and Korean officials, Lee draws attention to a number of factors that have affected U.S. policy: the functions of U.S. security policy in Korea, the role of the United States in South Korea's political democratization, President Clinton's policy of constructive engagement toward North Korea, President Bush's hegemonic policy toward North Korea, and the! hexagonal linkages among the United States, China, Japan, Russia, and the two Koreas.

Drawing on concepts of containment, deterrence, engagement, preemption, and appeasement, Lee's balanced and thoughtful approach reveals the frustrations of all players in their attempts to arrive at a modicum of coexistence. His objective, comprehensive, and definitive study reveals a dynamicâ€"and incredibly complexâ€"series of relationships underpinning a troubled and tenuous peace.

(2006)
Service Economies presents an alternative narrative of South Korean modernity by examining how working-class labor occupies a central space in linking the United States and Asia to South Korea's changing global position from a U.S. neocolony to a subempire.

Making surprising and revelatory connections, Jin-kyung Lee analyzes South Korean military labor in the Vietnam War, domestic female sex workers, South Korean prostitution for U.S. troops, and immigrant/migrant l! abor from Asia in contemporary South Korea. Foregrounding gend! er, sexu ality, and race, Lee reimagines the South Korean economic "miracle" as a global and regional articulation of industrial, military, and sexual proletarianization.

Lee not only addresses these under-studied labors individually but also integrates and unites them to reveal an alternative narrative of a changing South Korean working class whose heterogeneity is manifested in its objectification. Delving into literary and popular cultural sources as well as sociological work, Lee locates South Korean development in its military and economic interactions with the United States and other Asian nation-states, offering a unique perspective on how these practices have shaped and impacted U.S.-South Korea relations.

One of the most successful and popular artists to work in comics, Jim Lee is revered by fans worldwide thanks to his hyper-dynamic artwork and innovative character and costume design.

Now, his work on Batman and Superman â€" not to mention his! legion of WildStorm heroes including WildC.A.T.s, Divine Right and Deathblow â€" is celebrated in this beautiful hardback, which includes an exclusive interview with Jim Lee, a tour of his studio and hundreds of full-colour illustrations and pencils spanning his entire career!

Plus an all-new cover by Lee and an exclusive, all-new eight-page comic strip, written by Paul Levitz (Legion of Super-Heroes) with art by Lee!

LOVE LETTER - DVD MovieIts ads portrayed it as a wacky farce, while critics largely ignored it, presuming it to be a vanity project from Kate Capshaw (better known as Mrs. Steven Spielberg). But The Love Letter is neither; on the contrary, it's a low-key but surprisingly rich and touching film about love, illusions, and regret. Helen (Capshaw), a bookseller in a small seashore town, discovers an unsigned love letter that's fallen into the cushions of a couch in her store. The letter doesn't say who it's for, but Helen assumes it's for her and starts wondering who sent it. One would expect this to lead to a whirling comedy of mistaken identities, but after some amusing daydream moments, the movie follows its story with subtlety and nuance. The characters behave according to their own needs and desire! s, rather than the demands of standard Hollywood goofiness. The performances--from a cast including Tom Selleck (In and Out), Tom Everett Scott (That Thing You Do), Ellen DeGeneres (EDtv), newcomer Julianne Nicholson, and others--are uniformly unforced and natural. Viewers weary of the hyped-up, absurd emotional climaxes of most so-called romantic comedies will find a respite here. The Love Letter is a genuinely charming film. --Bret FetzerIts ads portrayed it as a wacky farce, while critics largely ignored it, presuming it to be a vanity project from Kate Capshaw (better known as Mrs. Steven Spielberg). Debra Messing (TV's Will & Grace) shines in this hilarious romantic comedy about the surprising road to finding true love. Kat Ellis (Messing) is determined to attend her younger sister's wedding with a date. Rather than face the ridicule of her family and in order to show up her ex-fiance, she resorts to the Yellow Pages to find a last-minute escort, Nick (Dermot Mulroney, My Best Friend's Wedding). His dashing good looks and quick-witted charm may win over her family. But will they win over Kat? Filled with unexpected twists and endless laughs, The Wedding Date is the one date that you'll want to keep!If you're a fan of the frazzled comic rhythms Debra Messing plies on Will & Grace, or if! you're pre-sold on the concept of Dermot Mulroney as the world's most dashing heartthrob--an idea given ample evidence here--this escapist romance may provide just enough distraction. The Wedding Date's Pretty Woman-in-reverse plot finds Kat Kat Ellis (Messing) hiring expensive male escort Nick Mercer (Mulroney) to fly to London and pose as her dashing new boyfriend at her sister's wedding so she can face the best man, an ex-fiancé who broke her heart. Non-fans of the stars or romantic comedies in general beware: there's no real chemistry or conflict, and you should alert the media if you can determine exactly when and why Kat and Nick fall in love. Mulroney has nothing to do but be sensitively suave--the film's entire running time is spent waiting for Kat to realize that Nick, hooker or no, is the best thing that ever happened to her (her father may be cinema's first dad to ever encourage his daughter to snare a gigolo while she still can). This is a relati! vely painless but forgettable first Date; you probably ! won't ne ed a second assignation.--Steve WieckingSTARTER WIFE:SEASON 1 - DVD MovieDrawing from her years in Hollywood, Gigi Lavangie Grazer, wife of producer Brian Grazer, penned The Starter Wife, which inspired the limited series that launched this USA Network dramedy. Author Molly Kagan (Will and Grace's Debra Messing) continues to forge a new life for herself after her divorce from Kenny (David Alan Basche, taking over from Ken Jacobson), a studio exec. In between petty battles with the high-powered wives who disdain her less affluent lifestyle and attempts to get back into the publishing game, the designer-clad mom pals around with Joan (Emmy winner Judy Davis), a recovering alcoholic, and Rodney (Chris Diamantopoulos), an interior designer. Her social circle expands when she befriends Liz (Danielle Nicolet), a pathologically possessive pitcher's spouse, and Zach (Hart Bochner), a writing instructor and possible love interest... if only Molly hadn't sworn off! men.

So, while Rodney and Joan have affairs with actors--one in the closet, the other in recovery--Molly turns to screenwriting and a possible no-strings fling of her own. Fantasy sequences parodying hits like The Godfather and Body Heat represent her deepest fears. If the show's sole season gets off to a shaky start, it finds its footing once the central trio becomes more fully rounded and relatable Though the rest of the year doesn't hit the same comedic heights as Will and Grace, Messing still comes on like a modern-day Rosalind Russell and The Starter Wife makes for light and frothy fun. In their commentary on two episodes, producers Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriot discuss the changes between the series and the miniseries, like the disappearance of Miranda Otto’s Cricket (just as Jacobson joined the cast of House, she joined the short-lived Cashmere Mafia). McGibbon, Parriot, Messing, and Bochner also comment on the 10 f! antasy sequences. --Kathleen C. FennessyPrimetime EmmyÂ! ® Award winner Debra Messing (Will and Grace) lights up the screen in The Starter Wife! Description If one looks back upon history, Korean cinema has always repeatedly passed through fixed cycles of booms and crisis. Now, as we go through the aftermath of compacted modernization, just as was the case with Korean society, indications of fissure and decline are slowly appearing within the industry. But just has been the case over all of these years when it has broken through crisis, Korean cinema is in any event supplied with a driving force through the appearance of new talents, a! nd will be able to transform itself once again. This book is an attempt to shed new light on some new faces of Korean film as we look back on the period leading up to the mid-2000s by highlighting the attempts of some young directors who have not yet accumulated long filmographies, but have achieved considerable results.Detective K Reproduction Poster Print Korean Style C 11 x 17 Inches - 28cm x 44cm

Drive-ins and grindhouses were replaced by multiplex theaters, but the VCR and Pay TV came to the rescue with a flood of direct to video sexy features. Remember trying to watch scrambled Pay TV looking for some skin?

The exercise craze of the early 80s and the popularity of plastic surgery elevated the standard of beauty and dozens of gorgeous actresses stormed on the scene here and abroad. Many had long successful careers in cinema while others were one hit wonders.

Teen sex comedies were all the rage with hits like Porkys and Fast Times At Ridgemont High, and slasher films like Friday The 13th and Nightmare On Elm St and their sequels providing an endless supply of sexy scream queens.

Our sex in cinema retrospective uncovers long-forgotten gems buried for years as well as some of the most significant films in the history of sex on the screen. C! ontroversial and groundbreaking films, you'll discover the mos! t memora ble and erotic scenes of the decade as well as insightful and controversial bios on each actress. In many cases it was their first and only nude appearance on film, making this a must-have reference guide to nudity in cinema.

Theres something for everyone from nurses to nuns, femmes fatales to hookers, strippers to women in prison with all the gaudy fashions, hairspray and unforgettable music, after all it was the Easy 80s.

This erotic and suspenseful tale of sex, lies and betrayal stars Elisha Cuthbert (The Girl Next Door) as Nina Deer, a pretty cheerleader whose life is turned upside-down by the arrival of her parents' godchild Dot (Camilla Belle), a deaf and mute girl recently orphaned by her father's death. Although Nina looks upon Dot's deafness with disdain, her family and friends develop a strange attraction to her, and Dot soon becomes a sounding board for everyone's heaviest burdens. But when Nina becomes convinced that Dot is hiding a few secrets of her own, she decides to confess a family secret so disturbing, it cannot be ignored. Also starring Martin Donovan and Edie Falco (TV's The Sopranos).High school ch! eerleader Nina Deer (Elisha Cuthbert) seems like the ultimate bitch in The Quiet. When Paul and Olivia Deer (Martin Donovan and Edie Falco) invite their deaf and mute godchild, Dot (Camilla Belle) to live with the family following the death of Dot's father, Nina plays Dot's evil stepsister. Dot silently persists as household dynamics unfold nightmarishly around her, revealing an unsavory affair that leaves the mother reaching for her bottle of painkillers. The more Nina reveals her secret fantasy to Dot, however, the more Dot feels compelled to step in. Director Jamie Babbit's film is rich with sexual confusion and sick psychology, making The Quiet surprisingly complex. Though Elisha Cuthbert's performance is strong, it is still a slowly paced film, and the sets, like dark, moody blue rooms in the Deer house, add unneeded melodrama. Still, The Quiet is a thriller about teen girls bonded to commit a heinous crime, and many will appreciate this variation ! on the tale of young female chivalry against monstrosity. -! -Trinie Dalton You won't find these anywhere else. Mother is a devoted single parent to her simple-minded twenty-seven-year-old son, Do-joon. Often a source of anxiety to his mother, Do-joon behaves in foolish or simply dangerous ways. One night, while walking home drunk, he encounters a schoolgirl who he follows for a while before she disappears into a dark alley. The next morning, she is found dead in an abandoned building and Do-joon is accused of her murder. An inefficient lawyer and an apathetic police force result in a speedy conviction. His m! other refuses to believe her beloved son is guilty and immediately undertakes her own investigation to find the girl's killer. In her obsessive quest to clear her son's name, Mother steps into a world of unimaginable chaos and shocking revelations.Just as South Korean director Bong Joon-ho's previous film, The Host, subverted the traditions of the giant monster movie to examine the effects of a crisis on a unique family, his latest effort, Mother, embraces the tropes of the murder mystery for an unsettling and affecting story of parental love taken to its extreme. Popular South Korean television actress Kim Hye-ja gives a powerful performance as a downtrodden acupuncturist whose mentally challenged son (Korean A-lister Won Bin) is accused of murdering a local schoolgirl. Bullied into a confession by the local police (led by Yoon Je-moon of The Host), the young man faces incarceration at a mental hospital unless his mother can discover the killer's true ! identity. Her inquiry leads her into classic noir territory, w! ith perc eived truths blown apart at every turn; in typical Joon-ho fashion, these discoveries are marked by moments of shocking violence, dark slapstick humor, and moving familial drama, which come together in a genuinely unique perspective on the nature of truth and commitment. The official South Korean submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards, Mother is yet another entry on a growing list of exceptional motion pictures from one of the international scene's most intriguing filmmakers. --Paul Gaita

Power consumption becomes the most important design goal in a wide range of electronic systems. There are two driving forces towards this trend: continuing device scaling and ever increasing demand of higher computing power. First, device scaling continues to satisfy Moore’s law via a conventional way of scaling (More Moore) and a new way of exploiting the vertical integration (More than Moore). Second, mobile and IT convergence requires m! ore computing power on the silicon chip than ever. Cell phones are now evolving towards mobile PC. PCs and data centers are becoming commodities in house and a must in industry. Both supply enabled by device scaling and demand triggered by the convergence trend realize more computation on chip (via multi-core, integration of diverse functionalities on mobile SoCs, etc.) and finally more power consumption incurring power-related issues and constraints.

Energy-Aware System Design: Algorithms and Architectures provides state-of-the-art ideas for low power design methods from circuit, architecture to software level and offers design case studies in three fast growing areas of mobile storage, biomedical and security.

Important topics and features:

- Describes very recent advanced issues and methods for energy-aware design at each design level from circuit and architecture to algorithm level, and also covering important blocks including  low power ma! in memory subsystem and on-chip network at architecture level

- Explains efficient power conversion and delivery which is becoming important as heterogeneous power sources are adopted for digital and non-digital parts

- Investigates 3D die stacking emphasizing temperature awareness for better perspective on  energy efficiency

- Presents three practical energy-aware design case studies; novel storage device (e.g., solid state disk), biomedical electronics (e.g., cochlear and retina implants), and wireless surveillance camera systems.

Researchers and engineers in the field of hardware and software design will find this book an excellent starting point to catch up with the state-of-the-art ideas of low power design.

For Yonz Aerup, warrior in training, life was simple: trudge through classes, play a few tricks, and generally have a good time before graduating into the Royal Army of the Illatzulian King. However, this illusion of peace is deftly shattered when a bandit clan attacks his school and steals a vital artifac! t of the Kingdom. The peacemaker that ended the last continental war, the object that ensured the balance of power between the kingdoms, is now torn from the hands of Illatzul, thrusting it into an unknown future. Wary of war, the King of Illatzul decides to send student ambassadors to occupy the eyes of the other kingdoms whilst he would desperately try to relocate and retrieve their key of survival. Though ignorant of the world, Yonz Aerup is sent to a foreign nation, where he must learn to cope with his new surroundings and emerge from being a pampered child of peace. Through events that rob him of his childish innocence, Yonz must learn to change himself if he wants to survive. He must learn that nothing is as it seems. No one is who they seem to be. Luckily for him, a winged guardian watches his path carefully.Hephaestus Books represents a new publishing paradigm, allowing disparate content sources to be curated into cohesive, relevant, and informative books. Strip Search (Inspeção Geral), 2004, Import

  • Strip Search DVD
Sherry is a young woman with a history of drug abuse & emotional turmoil. Just out of prison she finds herself struggling against all odds to reconnect with her estranged 5-year-old daughter while trying to readjust to the outside world. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 01/23/2007 Starring: Maggie Gyllenhaal Brad William Henke Run time: 96 minutes Rating: RA disturbing film about a recovering drug addict trying to regain control of her life, Sherrybaby succinctly depicts what can happen when want and desire aren't offset by control. In this bleak indie film, Sherry Swanson (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Stranger Than Fiction, Secretary) has just been released from a three-year stint in prison. Dressed in her inappropriate uniform of a halter top and oh-so-high platform heels, she goes to brother's house to see her 5-year-old daughter, Lexie (Ryan Simp! kins). Sherry is determined to be a mother to her child, but without a home, job, or any other form of stability, she grows frustrated and jealous of her brother and sister-in-law's roles in Lexie's life. Tall and willowy, Gyllenhaal brings a sad desperation and simmering sexuality to the role. Sherry's middle-class childhood was a blur of sex and drugs, and she seems incapable of breaking out of that destructive trap. While the script by first-time feature film director Laurie Collyer isn't wholly original, the picture moves at a good pace, giving insight as to why Sherry's resigned to using sex to get what she wants. While the family secret doesn't come as a complete surprise, it is somewhat perplexing that no one addresses it. Ultimately, it's Gyllenhaal who makes you care about a character that most people would've given up on. --Jae-Ha KimLee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) has a few strikes against her when she applies for a secretarial position at the law office ! of E. Edward Grey (James Spader). At first the work seems quit! e normal but soon, in between typing, filing and coffee making, Lee and Mr. Grey embark on a more personal relationship together, crossing the lines of conduct that would give any human resource director the vapors! This kinky love story features a standout performance by Maggie Gyllenhaal, an offbeat young actress in her first starring role. Gyllenhaal plays Lee, a nervous girl who compulsively cuts herself, who gets a job as a secretary for Edward, an imperious lawyer (James Spader, an old hand at tales of perverse affection). Edward's reprimands for typos and spelling errors begin with mild humiliation, but as Lee responds to his orders--which are driven as much by his own anxieties and fears as any sense of order--the punishments escalate to spankings, shackles, and more. Secretary walks a fine line. It finds sly humor in these sadomasochistic doings without turning them into a gag, and it takes Lee and Edward's mutual desires seriously without getting self-right! eous or pompous. Certainly not a movie for everyone, but some people may be unexpectedly stirred up by this smart and steamy tale of repressed passion. --Bret FetzerJames Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal star in the dark comedy Secretary. Praised as “daring, funny and quirkily erotic!” (Glenn Kenny, PREMIERE) and “sexy and highly stylized” (GEAR magazine), Secretary is the story of Lee Holloway (Gyllenhaal), a young woman with a few strikes against her after a brief stay in a mental hospital, who accepts a secretarial position working at the law office of E. Edward Grey (Spader). The work seems normal at first, but somewhere between the typing, filing and coffee-making, Lee and her new boss cross the line of their professional relationship and enter into a Human Resources nightmare! This kinky love story features a standout performance by Maggie Gyllenhaal, an offbeat young actress in her first starring role. So it is, but talk about an unhappy beginning! Never fear, writer/director Don Roos will fulfill the promise of that title in several unexpected ways. The story then flashes back to 1983 for Mamie's life-altering encounter with her stepbrother. Mamie and Charley (Steve Coogan) will struggle with its consequences for the rest of the film. Does her teen pregnancy explain the fact that she became an abortion counselor or that he came out of the closet? Roos doesn't say, but nor does he judge. He loves his characters--foibles and all--in his ambitious, Altman-esque follow-up to the acerbic, yet heartfelt The Opposite of Sex. As before, Kudrow is the center around which the other plotlines revolve (and her uptight, yet likable Mamie couldn't resemble TV’s Phoebe less). In the end, though, Maggie Gyllenhaal's seductive Jude and Tom Arnold's sensitive Frank are Roos'! most inspired creations. Their relationship is one of contemp! orary ci nema's oddest and most touching. The happy ending for one will be real, the other imaginary, but everyone will earn the one they get. --Kathleen C. Bette Gordon, who made her directorial debut in 1983 with Variety, returned 15 years later with this adaptation of Scott Bradfield's novel The History of Luminous Motion about an alcoholic mother. "Only two things mattered to me â€" being with my mom and being in motion," says ten-year-old Phillip (Eric Lloyd), who teaches himself physics and biology as he's driven about by his mother Margaret (Deborah Kara Unger). After a car crash, they settle down with Hackensack hardware store owner Pedro (Terry Kinney). Phillip receives letters and phone calls from hi! s dad (Jamey Sheridan). Eventually, mother and son leave Pedro to live on Staten Island â€" where the boy meets some strange teens (James Berland, Paz De La Huerta), Pedro appears as a ghostly figure, and Phillip's father turns up. Shown at the 1998 Locarno Film Festival. â€" Bhob Stewart Ten-year-old Phillip (Eric Lloyd) and his mother (Deborah Kara Unger of Crash and The Game) travel constantly from town to town, stealing enough money from obnoxious men to keep them in food and gas. A car crash lands them in Jersey suburbia, where Mom decides to settle down with Pedro, the man who rescued them from the wreck. Phillip doesn't agree, and after he takes a rash step, they're in flight once again--but now Mom is realizing she may not be the most troubled member of the family. When Phillip's father (Jamey Sheridan, The Ice Storm) returns to reclaim his child, the trouble only increases, and Phillip once again decides to take matters into his own hands. L! uminous Motion is a mix of compelling psychology and beaut! iful cin ematography, with a storyline that coils tighter and tighter. Dark and elliptical, but rewarding. --Bret FetzerAnnabella Sciorra plays a Manhattan shrink with a couple of particularly troubling patients. The most haunting is a woman (Deborah Unger) with unusually kinky sexual tastes; Sciorra gets gooned out when she realizes that her new boyfriend (Jamey Sheridan) is the same guy her patient has been seeing. And when the patient winds up dead, Sciorra begins looking slantwise at her boyfriend. Unfortunately, despite some spooky mood setting, this psychological thriller goes in circles and ends up nowhere, thanks to the implausible stretches of writer-director Christopher Crowe's script. Sciorra seems hollow at the film's center, though Sheridan brings a certain scary charisma to his boyfriend role and Alan Alda is solid as her psychiatric mentor. --Marshall FineSilent Hill reproduction Approx.
